What Do Republicans & LGBT’s Have In Common?

If anyone knows this it should be ya’ll out there in gay Fort Lauderdale.  Apparently members of the LGBT community and republicans both LOVE them some Subway.  That’s right gents…eat fresh.

YouGov BrandIndex ranks the brands with the best buzz by political party and LGBT status and Subway appeared as the number 5 brand among those of the republican party and number 7 among members of the LGBT community.

Has anybody else noticed the over abundance of Subway locations in the Fort Lauderdale area?  As a matter of fact, there is a Subway located almost across the street from The Cabanas Guesthouse & Spa.  I don’t know about you, but this is more of a reason to book that summer getaway!

Besties Awards – Video of The Cabanas winning “Best Guesthouse” award.

Cabanas Wins “Best Guesthouse” at The 2011 Besties Awards!

On Sunday February 27th, in conjunction with the nationally televised Oscars, The Manors Entertainment Complex hosted the 2nd Annual Besties Awards, a ceremony recognizing the best of the best local businesses that cater to the gay consumer.

The awards, which are broken down into categories (like The Oscars), offer not only bragging rights for the winners, but a genuine claim to the exceptionally high standards of service that are provided by their businesses.

Over the past five years alone, the continual investments into The Cabanas amenities and services have generated quite a following within the global gay community, resulting in over 70% of their bookings coming from return guests, year after year.  Even through the harsh and extensive economic downfall, The Cabanas Guesthouse & Spa has maintained their growth by providing a truly remarkable experience coupled with unprecedented customer service.

Other nominees within the “Best Guesthouse” category included Aragon Inn, Ed Lugo Resort, Orton Terrace, Pineapple Point, The Royal Palms, and The Worthington.

Hosted by Joe Posa (in drag as Joan Rivers) and his equally interesting sidekick, Mikey Verdugo, the ceremony drew in a packed house. The Oscars were displayed live on numerous oversized screens for those in attendance, while The Besties Awards were presented during each commercial break. The classy, red carpet atmosphere, along with the issuance of awards made for a genuinely exciting and equally entertaining evening.

Upon acceptance of their award, John Dorry and Bill Barnish (owners of The Cabanas Guesthouse & Spa) thanked the community, their loyal and ever-expanding customer base, and Lary Arnett of Times Ten Creative Marketing Solutions for his outstanding work which has helped them achieve the status of “The Best Guesthouse in Fort Lauderdale.”

“On behalf of Bill, myself and the entire staff at The Cabanas Guesthouse & Spa are very grateful and thankful for all of the support we have received over the past 10 years and happily look forward to many more years of offering our guests a joyful and memorable experience at our Guesthouse & Spa”.

Gay Pride April 17th in Miami Beach

by South Florida Gay News

After a highly successful event in 2009, the City of Miami Beach is gearing up for another historic Gay Pride Parade Festival and Expo set for Saturday, April 17 on Ocean Drive.

With award-winning actress Sharon Gless and army activist/Iraq veteran Lt. Dan Choi serving as Grand Marshals, crowds are expected to exceed 25,000; an amazing accomplishment according to Pride organizers for an event in its second year. View a Schedule of Events.

Pride Parade Highlights

The Pride Parade begins at noon at 5th Street on Ocean Drive, with a diverse range of festive floats and more than 1,000 people participating in the parade.  One of the most popular highlights of the parade is the Legacy Couples – 28 LGBT couples who have been in committed relationships for 20 years or more; George Volpe and Peter Santangelo have been together the longest, for 66 years.

Another highlight of the Parade is the Key West Rainbow Flag, a 100-foot piece of the flag created by the Key West GLBT Community Center.  Originally 8,000 feet long (1.25 miles), the flag contained 25 miles of seams before being broken up and donated to several LGBT organizations across the nation.  It was created at the request the late Harvey Milk and was designed by Gilbert Baker, designer of Milk’s eight-color flag 32 years ago. The Key West flag includes more than 18,000 yards of nylon fabric, 25 miles of seams and weighs more than three tons.

Many of the parade entrants will ride in classic cars, with Sharon Gless and Dan Choi leading in a vintage Rolls Royce.  South Beach performer Elaine Lancaster will ride in a classic Lindberg as part of the “Miami Beach 25/7” contingent, the same car that Madonna drove in the film Dick Tracy.

Pride Festival and Expo – Lummus Park, between 10th and 14th Streets

Immediately following the parade, the Expo will feature 150 booths, food kiosks, exhibits and a family-friendly play zone, creating a massive Gay Pride exhibition area for businesses, community organizations and entertainers to showcase their pride and support of LGBT equality.

Two entertainment stages will showcase local, national and international recording artists and music sets by international DJs (see schedule for details).

Pride Cruise

From Ocean Drive to the ocean, Miami Beach Gay Pride continues with the first-ever “Pride Celebration at Sea,” Monday, April 19 through Friday, April 23, a four-night/five-day voyage aboard the Norwegian Sky with stops in Grand Bahama, Nassau and Great Stirrup Cay.  The cruise is produced by Source Events, with a portion of tickets sold to be donated to Miami Beach Gay Pride.

An Eco-Friendly Pride Event, featuring The Green Team

ECOMB, the Environmental Coalition of Miami & the Beaches, in partnership with several local businesses, has developed a series of strategies to “Green” Miami Beach Gay Pride, including:

  • A comprehensive Recycling program along Ocean Drive and Expo Area. Recycling bins courtesy by Waste Management
  • Energy needs to be produced by Biodiesel Generators, provided by Sidram Power
  • Transportation and recycling support by EZGO Street Legal Electric LSV Cars, courtesy of Advantage Golf Cars
  • Green Team volunteers will ensure that the site remains clean and free of debris and/or recyclables. T-shirts made of organic cotton provided by Boucher Brothers Management.
  • Organic food and smoothies to be provided by Pasha
  • Serving utensils, napkins and drink cups made of recycled and recyclable plastic

Charlize Theron steps up support for gay marriage

Actress Charlize Theron has repeated her calls for gay marriage, saying she will not tie the knot with her boyfriend until gay and lesbian couples can do the same.
Appearing on The View on Thursday, she was asked by host Barbara Walters when she would marry long-term boyfriend Stuart Townsend. Theron replied: “I don’t want to get married because I feel that right now the institution of marriage feels very one-sided, and I want to live in a country where we all have equal rights.”

Several years ago, she was honoured by the Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation for increasing “visibility and understanding” of homosexuality.
